DESCRIPTION
Throughout the 1950's and 1960's rallying become an incredibly popular sport, with names like Elford, Waldegård and Hopkirk becoming household names as a result. To optimise speed and navigation, the teams chose to install mechanical tripmeters into the cockpits of the cars to show average speed, distance and time. In modern day rallying, these mechanical tripmeters are no longer used, however, they are still eligiable for use in HERO, FIVA and other classic regularity road rally events.
The Speedpilot Mk.III was the earliest of the Speedpilot range, with this particular example being the 4-knob version featuring an odometer, tripmeter and clock. Our vendor informs us that he was given this Speedpilot in the 1960's from a family friend, and that the unit had originally come from a Jaguar XK150. As it hasn't been in operation for many years, we cannot confirms its operation, but the vendor informs us that it was in working order when it was taken out of the XK150.
With a cable and mounting bracket in place, this Speedpilot would make the perfect accessory to any period rally car or would be prime for a restoration of its own.
