DESCRIPTION
The Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company of America was founded in in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1901 by Oscar Hedstrom and George Hendee, preceding Harley Davidson by 2 years. Their factory became affectionately known as the "Wigwam".
Between 1902 and 1908 they set many famous records including a World speed record for a motorcycle, in 1905 the first American "V" configuration engine, record breaking Trans-America by a motorcycle, and (as if to rub it in) the English 1000 mile reliability trial. Many great American racers such as Erwin "Cannonball" Baker, Charles " Fearless " Balke and Jake DeRosier made their name riding Indians. By 1910, they were the largest manufacturer of motorcycles in the world. In 1911, Indian decided to enter three motorcycles in the Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man. With chain drive, great reliability and a two speed gearbox, the sleeved down 1000c bikes ridden by Godfrey, Franklin and Moorehouse, finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall.
The motorcycle you see today represents a unique opportunity to purchase a very rare Indian that has been sympathetically and meticulously restored to a very high standard, including the rather quaint leather race knee pads.Correspondence tells us that it was originally owned by J.O. "Jack" Cunliffe, a well known sand racer and regular competitor on bikes and cars at Southport Sands.( More info in the history file). The current owner completed the restoration with a view to riding a commemorative lap at the 2011 Isle of Man TT. Circumstances, however, dictated a change of plan.A chance to own and enjoy a wonderful motorcycle with lots of history.
