SUMMARY
One of just two Gordon & Co. fabric-bodied, Doctors Coupés offered from long-term private ownership. Superbly restored in the past and currently running and driving well.
DESCRIPTION
The Austin Sixteen was introduced in 1927 as a medium saloon sitting within Austin's range above the Seven and Twelve models. The six-cylinder engine was new but had similarities to the engine fitted to the Twenty with its timing chain at the rear of the block. The design was up to date with the gearbox mounted in-unit with the engine and semi elliptic springs all round for the suspension.
It says a lot about the Austin Motor Company, that even though they were fully occupied building their hugely successful Sevens and Sixteens, they were still prepared to sell rolling chassis’ to outside coachbuilders. These included some fairly major concerns such as Swallow, Taylor, Duple and Mulliner as well as smaller producers including Arrow and Boyd Carpenter. Gordon & Co. coachbuilders of Taunton Lane, Sparkbrook, Birmingham built bodies on many chassis' from various manufacturers, including Ford, Chevrolet and Austin.
This delightful Doctors Coupé is one of only two ever built on an Austin Sixteen chassis by Gordon & Co. and currently the only known survivor. It was restored a few years ago and the engine was rebuilt in 2006 by CK Motor Engineers. According to our vendor; "The coupé coachwork is in good condition, the fabric covering also good, taught and rip free. The wings/bonnet have some imperfections but still present well. Wonderful interior. Had been stored for a number of years. Is running nicely, and starts on a quarter turn of the engine."
The car is charming and drives very well at the pace it was intended to attain. This is a rare opportunity to purchase a unique, Gordon & Co. bodied 16/6 with supporting history, original buff logbook and handbooks.
