SUMMARY
One of only 14 examples made, of which it is believed only two survive, this super-rare and recently beautifully restored PVT Coupé awaits its next lease of life.
DESCRIPTION
This AC is one of 14 rather special cars produced in 1933 and 1934 by AC cars of Thames Ditton all clothed in very attractive Close-coupled coupé bodywork.
This particular example (L69) is finished with delicate mahogany side body trims in-filled with Rattan and enhanced by the addition of Faux Landau Irons and is one of only two still believed to be in existence, with the other remaining Close-coupled coupé being sold in 2016 and exported to France (but in need of a full restoration). It is therefore believed that L69 is currently the only running example, having benefitted from a recent restoration.
Chassis no. L69, registered AXO 270, was purchased in 1994 by our vendor from a friend and the vehicle was used to drive to various events, however it proved a little unreliable so the decision was made to take the engine out and commence a rebuild in 1996. Due to the vendors ill health this project stalled for some years and the car deteriorated to the point where extensive works were required to restore it back to its former glory.
In 2020, Retroclassic Engineering Ltd took on the challenge of completing the remaining restoration works of L69. Most engine parts were refurbished or replaced with some needing to be remanufactured. The bodywork was resprayed, again to a very high standard. It was necessary to replace the engine block with a newly cast item, but the original block/head will remain with the car. The interior trim is somewhat original with a slight patina where original parts have been retained, but has benefitted from an overhaul and improvements throughout.
Our vendor is currently not enjoying the best of health and he has reluctantly decided to offer this rare AC to auction.
