DESCRIPTION

A WW2 Willys Jeep...

This particularly rare find is currently in Italy and is being shipped over to the UK in readiness for the forthcoming auction. Its exact date of manufacture is not clear but was probably around June 1942 as it has a glove-box (post March '42) and is correct in a number of small details :- brass glove-box data plates, no black-out lamp on the drivers side front wing, the earlier 'tall' windscreen without a rifle rack and a green 'Scheller' steering wheel, all of which are correct for a mid-1942 MB. In terms of originality, it appears to have a genuine wartime chassis with period axles and three-speed box and probably its genuine wartime body and windscreen. It has been painted in an incorrect shade of Olive-Drab and the bonnet serial number is a little too long but these details are easily rectified. Once we can get a closer look at the zinc chassis plate and body stampings our local authority on these vehicles, Guy Muller, will be able to date the Jeep much more accurately and possibly even establish a little of its wartime history. Given the aforementioned, and the fact that it may well be that the important parts of this vehicle are original, this would be a fabulous basis for a really accurate restoration, and with selling prices of good Jeeps increasing as they have done over the last few years, this could be a real opportunity.
