1948 Land Rover Series One

The Land Rover entered production in 1948 and it later became known as the Series 1. It was launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show in the same year. It was originally designed for light farm and industrial use it had a steel box section chassis andwn in good condition. The movement is a Rolex signed automatic with date. The dial is white with gold roman numeral hour markers and luminous hands. Presented in nice condition ready to wear.

an aluminium body. The 4 speed gearbox was taken from a Rover P3 and coupled to a two speed transfer box. This incorporated an unusual four wheel drive system with a free-wheel unit, as seen on several Rover cars of the time. This disengaged the front axle from the transmission on the over-run allowing a form of permanent 4WD. A ring pull mechanism in the driver's foot well allowed the free wheel to be locked to provide the more traditional 4WD set up. It was designed to be a basic vehicle, even tops for the doors and a canvas roof were optional extras. The rugged Land Rover was well received by the public and ended up being used not just for agricultural work but also by police forces, military organisations, aid workers in remote places and explorers alike all across the globe.

It is very rare to even see an early Series 1 such as this, let alone up one that is for sale. It is identified as number 651 off the production line so, this is a very early model, easily identifiable by its pre 1500 square bulkhead and ring pull 4WD mechanism that is located in the driver's foot well along with many additional rare features that were only found on the early 1948 Land Rovers. We are informed by the vendor that the vehicle was correctly and painstakingly restored in the mid-eighties using many original parts that were still available at the time. There are various bills and paper work that go with the vehicle. Since this restoration it has only covered 800 miles due to the fact that it was part of a private collection of Land Rover vehicles and, as a result, has not been seen by the public in over 30 years. Identification numbers are as follows: Chassis=R860651, Engine=8600883, Gearbox=860852, Carburettor=48 32PB12k48, Front Axle=860477. We are informed by the vendor that the rear axle is also a matching number item and are awaiting confirmation.

The vehicle exudes a superb patina that is in keeping with exactly what a Series 1 Land Rover should look like.
