DESCRIPTION
The Bristol 403 was produced between 1953 and 1955 by the Bristol Aeroplane Co. (whose car division later became Bristol Cars). The 403 was the third of the eventual five series of Bristol's powered by the BMW-derived pushrod straight-six engine.
Retaining much of the same styling as the 401, the 403 featured many mechanical improvements. The 1971 cc six-cylinder engine was modified through the use of bigger valves and larger main bearings, which increased the power output to 100 horsepower as against 85 hp on the 401. To cope with this increased power, an anti-roll bar was fitted on the front suspension and improved drum brakes known as "Alfins" (Aluminum finned) were fitted.
The car offered here is an original right hand drive 5 speed manual which, unusually, was first delivered to Switzerland. One would attribute this to post wartime incentives for soldiers purchasing vehicles shortly after WWII.
The vehicle was imported into the UK in 1975 and has since had just 5 previous owners. The car was comprehensively restored in the mid 1980's to a concours standard and has clearly been very well cared for throughout it's life. Purchased by the late Mr John Melville-Smith in 2006, the car has been meticulously maintained. For example in 2007 the car was stripped to bare metal and repainted to restore it's former glory.
Further testament to the level of care and attention that the car has been subject to can be seen in a comprehensive bill of £16,000 for an engine rebuild and upgrade to 140bhp in 2010.
Offered with the car is a fantastic history file containing a wealth of invoices relating to the car, and correspondence with the Bristol owner's club detailing much of the past ownership of the vehicle.
With just 281 built, this Bristol 403 is not only rare but also a stylish, sporting gentleman's carriage offering the convenience of 4 comfortable seats.
