1957 Heinkel 153

When aircraft designer Ernst Heinkel saw the Iso Isetta , he decided that he could design one better, using aircraft principles and making it lighter yet faster with a smaller engine. He did just that with the Kabine 150, the quintessential "bubble car" with its large window area and longer, sleeker lines, that were a cross between an Isetta and a Messerschmitt. Production began in March 1956 with the Kabine Model 150, using the 174 cc 9.2 hp single-cylinder, four-stroke engine that powered the Heinkel Tourist scooter. In October 1956, Heinkel introduced the Kabine Model 153 (with three wheels) and the Kabine Model 154 (four wheels), both with 204 cc engines.The Kabine had a steel unit body and access to the interior was by an opening front, but in order not to infringe Iso Rivolta's patent used on the Isetta, the steering wheel did not move with the door. However, it did feature a reverse gear, unlike some other bubble cars. The fabric sun roof served as an emergency escape hatch should the sole door in front of you become jammed in a collision and provided that you could disentangle your feet from the pedals. Offered here, is a 1957 Heinkel Kabine 153 that's a rare German factory built example. It has recently been imported from the dry climate of South Africa and has been subject to a full nut and bolt restoration. The engine, gearbox and suspension are either new or reconditioned. The car (can you call it that?) is really excellent overall and almost as good underneath as it is on top. It's a matching numbers example, as validated by the Heinkel Trojan Owners Club. All the chrome is in great condition and it has been re-trimmed in the original and rare fabric. It's now UK registered and ready to be enjoyed. This is an adorable little "bubble car" and won't take long to settle into a new home.
