1960 Alvis TD21 Drophead 3.0litre Coupe by Park Ward

The Alvis 3.0 litre TD21 was produced with a 2993cc straight six engine giving 115bhp between the end of 1958 and and October 1963. All bodies were built by Park Ward and fitted with a new 4 speed manual gearbox from Austin Healey or a Borg Warner 3 speed auto. Only 191 original series 1 drophead coupes were built from the total of 784 cars made.

This manual 3.0 litre Drophead Coupe was completed on the 5th February 1960 and delivered to Brooklands Garage, Bond Street, London in it's current colour combination of metallic grey (P508) and red leather (VM.3195-TR-C-7) with a red hood. The car was supplied with optional wire wheels, walnut dash and front disc brakes.

During the late 1960's the car was exported to America and not repatriated until 1989 when the car then received a 10 year body-off chassis full restoration. The bodywork was carried out by Thomas Keate Classic Cars of Exeter and the mechanicals by Snow and Stephens of Exeter which the comprehensive history file tells us cost well in excess of £20,000 over the period, including new leather upholstery and a new maroon hood supplied at the end of the rebuild in 2001. It was then re-united with it's original registration mark of '333 NKX' and the restoration finally finished in 2002 when it was sold to the father of the current Scottish vendor.

Used sparingly by him with records of routine maintenance and MOT's on file, the next major expense was a full engine rebuild carried out in October 2009 by Classic Restorations in Alyth, Perthshire costing £14,564 and including a block rebore with new pistons, a reground crankshaft, new camshaft and a refurbished cylinder head with new valves and guides. The fuel pump was upgraded to electric and electronic ignition also fitted. Since then it has remained SORN and just travelled to and from the MOT station annually.

Now ready to be enjoyed and cherished once more as values in early Alvis's continue to climb.
