DESCRIPTION

Initially designed as delivery trucks around the cities, the Austin FGs are most fondly remembered as Hovis bread trucks, library wagons and also door-to-door coal trucks.

The small lower cabin windows not only provided additional light within the cabin, but also allowed the driver to see the curb at all times when making deliveries in the city.

It was often affectionately nicknamed a 'Thrupenny Bit' due to the hexagonal shape cabin - a result of the rear facing doors opening backwards. This made it handy for local deliveries, enabling the truck to be driven with the doors open and also allow a delivery boy to stand on the step on the side of the cabin clear of traffic, hopping off to make a speedy delivery when the road is clear.

This 1961 seven tonne truck spent much of its life in storage until being acquired by our vendor and subject to a professional restoration by Strictly Classics. Tax exempt and emissions exempt, the truck is fitted with its original 3.8 diesel BMC engine mated to its original 4 speed non syncro crash gearbox. We are informed it starts immediately - hot, cold or whatever the weather! In period, these were commonly regarded as a very reliable and also economical lorries.

The truck is fitted with all round air-assisted servo on the drum brakes, providing a good amount of stopping power. The custom made beaver tail recovery body is clad with genuine Keruing wood bed made from boards shipped from Malaysia - a very durable hardwood with a resin that is oily and will not deteriorate. The bed has been built with two kicks in the tail to make a smooth ark to load custom lowered vehicles easily along with extra long reinforced ramps for extra ground clearance that slide inside the body at the tail of the truck.

Also fitted on the loading bed is a very powerful winch removed from a Second World War lorry; the exact tonnage is not known but the vendor tells us that it has pulled vehicles in excess of 3 tonne with ease. As shown in the images, the truck is capable of carrying a huge range of vehicles be it large, small, low, high, heavy or light.

A superbly restored truck which would be ideal for transporting your race car to Goodwood, Le Mans Classic, Silverstone Classic and other prestigious historic motor racing events. Perfect for that period look and extra wow factor.

The sign writing shown on the vehicle are laser cut stickers and can be easily removed and have been left on the vehicle for display purposes.
