- This very rare matching numbers right-hand drive example is one of just 562 produced for the world RHD market, with around 250 believed to still be in existence today
Offered here is a fabulously well-restored Mercedes-Benz 190 SL Roadster presenting in a lovely colour combination with Grey/Blue paint and a Poppy Red interior. According to Daimler-Benz archives, this particular example was manufactured in September 1961, to UK-specification in right-hand drive with options including headlamps for left-hand driving and instruments with English inscriptions.
Our vendor purchased this 190 SL in 2017 and took the decision to commission a full ground-up, nut and bolt restoration incorporating a few subtle modern updates for the purpose of touring. This work was entrusted to a recognised marque specialist, Premium Classic Cars, with all work evidenced in a stage-by-stage photographic account which accompanies the car in the file along with supporting invoices. The matching-numbers engine has been stripped and rebuilt along with all other mechanical aspects. For added peace of mind, our vendor also commissioned a post-restoration inspection report by a leading marque specialist which also accompanies the car.
This report summarises the restoration; ''767 XPL been made into an excellent example of a Mercedes-Benz 190SL. A top quality, thorough, nut and bolt restoration has been carried out; mechanicals, body, interior, all to the highest standard. With use and the acquisition of genuine patina I have every confidence that this car will meet your expectations of ownership from a well-restored 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190SL.''
Subtle updates include front disc brakes for safety, a Webber carburettor conversion that very nicely incorporates the original air-box - a popular update for improved performance, and a modern DAB radio with period appearance.
Having covered just under 200 miles since restoration and dry stored correctly, the car currently presents really well. The Grey/Blue (DB166) paintwork is just beautiful and really suits the silhouette, the interior is simply stunning and very well finished in Poppy Red leather with matching carpets and a period Becker Mexico, and the Navy Blue hood fits perfectly. The car fires into life on-the-button and is reported to drive as well as it looks. Offered with an MOT valid until the end of July 2021, the aforementioned history file, inspection report, current V5c and various other supporting documents.
We have currently run out of superlatives but, when we find some more, they will be pointed in the direction of this simply exquisite Mercedes 'Boulevardier'.
