DESCRIPTION

The Mercedes-Benz 190SL is a two-door convertible produced between May 1955 and February 1963. The 190SL closely resembled in its styling, engineering and suspension its big brother, the 300 SL. However, the 190SL did not use the 300SL's purpose-built tubular space frame chassis, but was built instead on a modified, shortened saloon platform.

The 190SL was powered by a 1.9 L straight-four engine which developed 104hp, however the 190SL earned itself a reputation for not running that smoothly which was due to the difficulty in tuning the twin-choke dual Solex carburettors. However, when set up correctly the 190SL is a joy to drive and will reward the driver with a relaxed driving experience.

This 1961 190SL is a rare righthand drive car with one owner from 1985 and just 71,000 miles from new. It is presented in its period Grey paintwork and original Red leather interior rather than the vinyl seen on some cars.

Dry stored since 1990 during which time it has benefitted from a total strip down, blast cleaned where necessary, then repaint and re-assembled. There has been no welding or new panels fitted, all bodywork is original and the engine has been rebuilt by Mercedes-Benz specialists Crewe Engines.

The mechanical refresh included all of the major components including the original carburettor's and suspension. The bodywork has been refinished in its original Grey, the chrome is in good order and the original soft top is still fitted. There is a small amount of documentation from Rose and Young of Caterham who serviced the car in its past.

This 190SL is in exceptionally original condition and has been painstakingly rebuilt by John Holmes of SVO and has to be one of the most original of it's kind available for sale.
