DESCRIPTION
Norton Motors were Birmingham's most prominent motorcycle maker, always in the news and always providing the city with winning exploits on the race track. Post-WW2, their success rate increased, with 'the unbeatable Norton' taking trophy after trophy, in the process making it Britain's most famous motorcycle firm.
Commercially, the company's brilliant adaption of the TT-Race proven 'Featherbed' frame for their road range in the 'fifties lifted the handling of these fine machines on to another level. The 500cc and 600cc 'Dominators' did just what its name said, though there were, as might be expected, buyers who constantly demanded yet more power. In response to this, a tuned and faster 646cc Dominator was conceived in 1961 as a market successor to the USA-only 'Manxman'. It came with the new 'slimline' Featherbed frame,twin-carburettors, a ported cylinder head, a strengthened bottom end and ignition was by a Lucas Competition magneto. It also boasted a new style tank and finish which including chrome mudguards.
The new machine was announced in 1962 as the 'Dominator Sports Special', the 'Dommi SS' quickly earned for itself a reputation as the best of the 'Dommies'. In later years, though, many were converted to 'café-racer' specification and stripped of their original guards and tanks.
What we have here is an extremely well preserved motorbike that has seen very little use over the last 20 years having had only had two owners since 1984. There is paperwork for both a reground crankshaft and new bearings which were fitted in 1989.
This is an extremely well cared for bike that will be supplied with a fresh MoT and offers superb value in the current market.
