DESCRIPTION
AC introduced a four seater coupe to its model range in 1959, the Greyhound. The Greyhound shared many components with the smaller Ace range, including the same engine choices. Most cars used the 2 litre and 2.2 litre Bristol engines, although the original AC in-house design was available at first. A true four-seater with decent luggage space, it further benefited from all-round independent coil-sprung suspension, a slick four-speed manual gearbox, disc / drum brakes and rack and pinion steering. The straight-six engine which had done so much to establish the AC name in competition circles was credited with a 100mph-plus top speed and brisk acceleration. The Greyhounds coachwork looked elegant and contemporary and boasted lines that were every bit as sleek as its namesake. Essentially hand built, production lasted until 1963, by then only 83 cars had been thought to have left the Thames Ditton factory. This AC Greyhound is was first registered in 1962 and has been the subject of significant recent expenditure. Whilst the older paintwork and interior show nice patina and character, the mechanicals of this vehicle have been completely re-worked. The engine is a Zodiac Mk III 2.6 litre that was fitted many years ago. The engine block has been rebuilt with new big ends and re-bored pistons. The top end was rebuilt by the last owner with unleaded inserts and new valves and springs. In addition, an uprated starter motor, electronic ignition and oil pump ensure mechanical peace of mind. The gearbox is a rebuilt 5-speed Ford unit and a new clutch and slave cylinder have also been fitted. The suspension, brakes and steering have also been upgraded and feature power steering, new coilovers with adjustable shocks all round, new front discs and calipers and the rear drums have been rebuilt. The exhaust is a stainless steel unit and provides a raspy engine note. Whilst not necessarily one for the purists, this Greyhound still retains its stunning aluminium body, is finished to a great mechanical specification and looks superb in British Racing Green with green leather interior. With only 83 models ever produced, this example offers exclusive 1960s GT driving for a most reasonable outlay.
