DESCRIPTION

The second generation of the SL series began with the 230 of 1963. Designed by Paul Bracq, its wonderfully crisp styling clothed a monocoque chassis equipped with all round independent suspension, power assisted disc/drum brakes, recirculating ball steering and a 2306cc straight six engine of 150bhp and 145 lb ft of torque mated to either a four speed manual or automatic transmission. Of the 48,912 W113 Series cars made between 1963 and 1971, 19,831 were 230SLs.Originally delivered new to Hong Kong in 1964, and not repatriated to the UK until 1981, this stunning Mercedes-Benz Pagoda still retains its period Log Book from its time overseas. Finished in Diamond Blue Metallic with contrasting Blue hide interior, this fine example of the marque boasts an incredible history file with considerable sums having been lavished on the car in its time.Perhaps the most significant expenditure has been since 2007, during which period this Mercedes has undergone a complete nut and bolt restoration by recognised and skilled craftsmen which was completed in 2014. The body work was prepared by Nigel Cooper Coachworks of West London, renowned for their Concours winning skills with Mercedes-Benz, Aston Martin and Facel Vegas and the gorgeous paintwork, trim, engine rebuild and finishing were completed by respected Mercedes' experts, Roger Edwards of Amersham. The result is an absolutely stunning example of this classically beautiful car and as close to 'perfect' as we, in the old car game, dare to award....The engine bay is beautiful and those parts that can be made to shine, gleam. Everything else appears to work perfectly. The 2300cc. engine mated to the manual gearbox delivers a spirited and rewarding drive, not always the case with the smaller engined cars. Complete with matching hardtop, this little Mercedes has only been lightly used but regularly exercised in its current ownership and since its restoration. Any post restoration niggles have been ironed out and the car has been fully set up, runs sweetly and is ready to enjoy. The recent replacement of the clutch master and slave cylinders, whilst not strictly required, demonstrates the continuing care that this car receives. An attractive proposition, no doubt, for our friends at the Hong Kong Classic Car Club, this car from February 1965 was registered "AF 6933" during its time in HK and resided at the Skyline Mansions, 51 Conduit Road, where today more than £3m GBP is required to secure lodging. We understand, but can't confirm, that this car could re-enter and be registered in Hong Kong with no duties or taxes to pay. Even those with nothing but a passing appreciation for classic cars, can"t help but be bowled over by the condition, quality and beauty of this Mercedes which, we"re confident, could not be replicated for less than £160,000 today. Worthy of the most careful consideration…**Please note, the registration number "8 MOS" does not accompany this Lot, however, it may be available by separate negotiation.
