DESCRIPTION
If you want to compete in the MSA British Historic Rally Championship today there are just a handful of top teams to build, prepare and run your car for you to a very high standard. Perhaps at the very top of this short list, certainly if you wish to compete in a Porsche, is Tuthill Porsche - a long established and much respected Midlands Porsche rally specialist, run by father and son Francis and Richard Tuthill. In addition to many British Historic rally wins and championship wins to their credit, they recently added the 2011 East African Safari Rally to their tally of outstanding victories with the Porsche marque. They specialise in 911 rally cars prepared as 2.0 litre MSA historic cars, 3 litre MSA post historic cars and 3 litre MSA classic specification rally cars for UK use, as well as Safari spec long distance FIA endurance cars.
This particular car was prepared originally in 1999 by Richard Tuthill himself as his own private left hand drive car to take part in the MSA British Historic Rally Championship in order to show the dominant Fords of the day the real potential of a well prepared and driven 2.0 litre 911 in the forests and also on tarmac. It was painstakingly prepared with many hundreds of hours work going in to the shell alone (seam welded, integral weld in cage) and all the best and most competitive parts available at the time were fitted, including; close ratio gearbox and LSD, front and rear sumpguards, Tuthill spec brakes with adjustment, Leda front and Bilstein rear dampers, perspex side and rear screens, light weight wiring loom and high spec alternator, light pod with 4 spots, OMP harnesses, Sparco seats, Terra Trip with phone intercom etc. Richard built and drove the car himself in a handful of events scoring outstanding class wins and outright top 5 results in just a 2.0 litre car, fitted with the best engine/gearbox, drivetrain, suspension and brakes that the regulations of the day would allow.
The car was eventually sold to privateer, Steven Baker, and used on a couple of events prior to an accident ending his time with the car. The car was then stored by him for a number of years prior to being sold to the current vendor who has completely stripped and re-built the car with new replacement parts where necessary (the original bodyshell, engine and box retained as only panel work was necessary) to bring the car back to the outstanding condition in which it is is presented today.
The car has just come out of this fresh restoration with 155 bhp still on tap (only 3 events since full rebuild) and all the right bits to once again be a front running competitive entrant as a 2.0 litre MSA/HTP papered car, eligible for all British rounds.
Tuthills tell us the equivalent car could not be built today for less than £100,000 - making this one look exceptional value!
