Now in its seventh generation, the Corvette began life in 1953 with the C1 - a model that inspired a generation of young Americans and gave the Ford Empire a nine-year headache. However it was the C2, the immortal Sting Ray produced between 1963 and 1967, that really set Chevrolet's cash registers ringing and left us with the most desired and collectable Corvette to date. Designed by Larry Shinoda under the guidance of the legendary Bill Mitchell, influences on the Sting Ray's unique and unforgettable form are said to include: the E-type Jaguar, a Mako shark once caught by Mitchell, the 'Q Corvette' concept car of 1957 and the 'Mitchell Sting Ray' design exercise. By the autumn of 1959 elements of the two unique Corvettes had been built into XP-720 - the design programme that led to the production of the Sting Ray as we know it.
This handsome C2 Corvette emerged from the St Louis plant in 1966 finished in Rally Red, fitted with a small-block (5.4-litre) V8 mated to a Powerglide automatic gearbox and factory fitted with 'Four Seasons' air conditioning, power steering, a leather interior, 36-gallon tank, power brakes and a recessed spare wheel. We understand from the information sheet with the car that it has benefitted from a mechanical and electrical restoration, however, there are one or two areas that will need finishing.
Owned since 1989 by its previous keeper we understand that the restoration included the full renewal and upgrade of the Wilwood disc braking system (power brake extra option), radiator and cooling system renewal, rewired with an original cotton loom, full strip and skim, re-chroming and enamelling with every panel perfectly aligning, renewal of the petrol tank and the full refurbishment of the engine bay parts, equipment and controls including power steering reservoirs. The small block (5.4-litre) V8 has been fully stripped, rebuilt and topped with a new Holly 1850SA carburettor and the 'Powerglide' automatic gearbox has been totally stripped and refurbished. Our vendor's widow is currently unable to locate any paperwork in relation to the engine and gearbox rebuild as it was done some year's ago by her late husband, so prospective purchasers will have to form their own opinion as they will about the small amount of work required to completely finish the project. She did say, however, that
