SUMMARY
DESCRIPTION
The Jaguar Mk.II saloon was voted the car of the year when launched in 1959. With three engine options of 2.4, 3.4 and 3.8 (the 3.8 being the fastest saloon in the world at the time), it would form the mainstay of Jaguar's saloon production until 1967. It would also claim notoriety with both the police force and the villains of the day due to its performance and reliability. On track, the car enjoyed similar success in the early days of British Saloon Car racing, being driven by legends such as Graham Hill and Sir Jackie Stewart, cementing its place in history. In September 1967 the 2.4 and 3.4 litre Mark II cars were rebadged as the 240 and 340 respectively. These were interim models until the introduction of the XJ6 in September 1968.Engine output of the 340 with its straight-port type cylinder head and twin HS6 SU carburetors with a new inlet manifold was now quoted at 210bhp, whilst the automatic transmission was upgraded to a Borg-Warner 35 dual drive range. The economies of the new 340 models came at a cost sadly, as the leather upholstery was replaced by Ambla leather-like material and tufted carpet was used on the floor, although both had been introduced on the Mk.II a year earlier. This, matching numbers, automatic gearbox, Jaguar 340 was manufactured on the 7th of September, 1967 and is an imposing and handsome car offered in the timeless colours of British Racing Green with a plush black interior. It benefits from being the recipient of extensive maintenance and upgrades during its life, including a rebuilt engine and cylinder head in 2012 by Coventry Boring & Metalling Co., a Graham Whitehouse rebuilt gearbox in 2003, a power steering conversion, stainless steel exhaust and low wear polyurethane suspension bushes for better handling. This car comes from the home of a skilled engineer, who is an avid Jaguar collector, and has been set up to be extremely reliable and when required a fantastic grand tourer, as proven by a handful of problem free long distance trips with his family including the Le Mans classic.Accompanying the car is more than 30 years of comprehensive history, including tax discs and MoT's tracking the life of this Jaguar through its six owners. Furthermore, this car retains its original tool kit and is fitted with a fully functioning tow bar. As a nod to its sporting heritage, this timeless Jaguar wears Coombs style rear spats and is fitted with an evocative E-Type style steering wheel. The paintwork is in good order all round, save for one or two very minor blemishes at the bottom of the offside rear passenger door, and the interior is in excellent condition with reconditioned wood, new carpets, new headlining and excellent seating.Offered Without Reserve and in fine order throughout, this 340 Jaguar is worthy of serious consideration at auction.
