DESCRIPTION
The International Six Days Trial was recognised as a key event for European bike manufacturers to demonstrate their prowess in the late 1960's. The rules written by the ACU stipulated that all riders should use a machine of their own Nationality. This coincided with the decline of the British motorcycle industry and meant that UK competitors had to turn to specialist frame producers, such as Eric Cheney. His hand built products used only the finest materials and came with a reputation for superb quality and highly advanced suspension innovation. This bike was based around a similar design - a twin down-tube chassis with tapered conical hubs, Ceriani type forks and a larger alloy fuel tank. Power came from a Triumph 5TA 500cc twin.
In 1967 he produced a limited run of 500cc Triumph based twins ridden by the best riders of the day. The vendor tells us this bike was used by Dick Sutton in numerous events that year with a personal best of a bronze medal achieved in the 1967 ISDT held in Poland. He later went on to set up a trail riding company based at Brecon in Wales where he ran trail riding holidays and used this bike regularly as a tour leader.
A rare bike with an interesting background, ready to use.
N.B. The authenticity of this bike being the actual bike used by Dick Sutton has now been questioned. Whilst conceding that 'some of the components appear to be from Dick's bike', the challenger to the history has raised a question raised over the frame in particular, which it is suggested has been converted from a Gold Star BSA. We advise all prospective purchasers to carry out their own independent research as competition motorcycles may have been damaged or rebuilt during their competition career.
