DESCRIPTION

In many ways the most significant new car from Rolls-Royce since the Silver Ghost was the Silver Shadow, launched in 1965 with a host of technical innovations including unitary construction, disc brakes all round and fully independent suspension. John Blatchley's styling was crisp and modern and the new Silver Shadow met with considerable acclaim. In keeping with Crewe tradition, there was a Bentley version as well, badged the T-series and distinguished by the unique radiator shell and flying 'B' mascot. Mechanically, both cars employed an updated version of the V8 engine found in the Cloud/S-type series with a new light alloy cylinder head and an improved Hydramatic transmission with the gear selector on the steering column. Early (pre-1969) T-series cars have a lovely Sixties feel inside, with a simple, uncluttered dashboard and no centre console. The T-series was always much rarer than the equivalent Silver Shadow - with 1,712 made in the period 1965 to 1976 it was outsold by the Rolls-Royce by around ten to one. This has made the subtler, more discreet Bentley more desirable today and the market for good examples remains strong.

Only ever on rare occasions does one turn up such a beautiful example of a Bentley T1, these large Bentleys never fail to impress. It drives just as one would expect, it is effortless with a super crisp engine note, superbly smooth gear changes, and even balanced braking all round. A refresh of the paintwork has been carried out over recent years and has been done to a very high standard, now settled nicely it retains the high lustre and patina associated with an original factory finish. Coachwork is uniform and blemish free, complemented by the two tone bodywork and those beautiful full covering hub caps. The original interior is a beautiful place to be, the well patinated leather having a lovely feel to it and the wood is in good condition, this includes the dual picnic tables in the back.

The engine fires instantly and immediately settles to a silent hum, the 6.2 litre engine builds up its enthusiasm stealthily via the auto box as it propels the best part of two tons of British workmanship forward until you are fairly thundering along. The steering is exceptionally light and literally controllable with one finger and the brakes pull the car up with no fuss and the Bentley stops in a perfect straight line.

These early T1s are without doubt the purest of the breed and look absolutely majestic at any angle, sold with a long MOT this particular example merely serves to demonstrate just what incredible value these luxury motor cars really are and surely a fine investment.
