The original Mustang was exactly the right car at the right time and consequently this 'sports car for the masses' sold a million in less than two years. The secret of the Mustang's success was a broad appeal that extended beyond the target market thanks to a great value-for-money package combining sporty looks, decent economy, and brisk performance. Available as a Notchback Coupe, Convertible or, from 1965, as Fastback Coupe and the array of trim and engine options meant that there was a 'Stang' to satisfy everyone. The fastback Coupe is an effortlessly cool shape and is the Mustang profile that people default to in their mind's eye. Mustangs could be ordered in specifications ranging from six-cylinder economy to V8-powered luxury, whilst customers could choose from an extensive range of factory options with the result that seldom are two Mustangs identical.
Midway through 1968, Ford replaced the 289 V8 with a 302ci, 4-barrel 4.9-litre Windsor V8 engine, utilising modified intake and heads and giving 230hp and 310 lb/ft of torque. The 'J-code' in the VIN was only applied for 1-year, making J-code Mustangs relatively rare.
The car presented here is a first-generation, post-facelift, left-hand drive, 1968 Fastback with some notable upgrades. It was imported into the UK in 2015 and subject to a full 'bare-shell' restoration in July 2018 by Scottish Mustang specialist Javad Ahmed, with just 1,200 miles covered since. The 4.9-litre engine was rebored, fitted with a reground crank and competition ported and polished heads, and fully rebuilt with all new internals and an aluminium radiator

The interior has been extensively retrimmed including new seats, carpets, door panels, and headlining; the dashboard sports Dakota digital VHX instruments and a Mota-Lita steering wheel.
