DESCRIPTION
The name John Chatham is famous for racing sports cars in the glory days of the 1960s, 70s and 80s, mostly with Austin Healeys and MGs which he campaigned successfully in both International races and rallies covering 22 different countries in a 50 year career! A personal friend of the late great Donald Healey, John was involved in the development and racing of many Healeys, but the '100' and the '3000' in particular. Known everywhere as 'Mr. Big Healey' he has raced against the best, including Sir Stirling Moss and Timo Makinen, and major events have included both Le Mans and the Targa Florio. Still living in Bristol, he remains associated and active in historic racing today.
This car is a genuine period race car that John enjoyed great success with. Infact, John built 4 of the original MGC Sebring cars and used many original 'Works' parts in the building of this particular car. It is now offered for the first time on the open market for many years.
The car was first race prepared by John in the 1970s and subsequently featured on the front cover of the 'MG A,B and C book' by Chris Harvey (who bought the car in the 1970s from John and had him convert it in period to a Rover V8). John eventually bought the car back from Chris and more recently it has been fully rebuilt and prepared for racing once more by both Father and son. As part of this process the car had the 3.9 litre stage 3 Rover V8 engine upgraded to give 250bhp and 240 lbs foot torque, coupled to a 5 speed Rover SD1 gearbox with a limited slip diff. The stainless steel exhaust has a tubular manifold and the front brakes feature 3 pot calipers. Meanwhile telescopic shock absorbers and kevlar springs feature in the suspension and the car also comes with a rear roll cage, 15X7 inch wire wheels, a Holley carb and a period FIA 'Works' hardtop.
This is a rare chance to acquire a significant period race car, which can also be used on the road and is therefore ideal for road rallies or Tours, that has an interesting history and a 40 year known ownership. Sensibly guided and here to be sold.
