DESCRIPTION

This year celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of the introduction of the Porsche 911. It was first presented to the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1963. It replaced the 356 and was styled by Ferdinand 'Butzi' Porsche and Erwin Komenda, who was then head of the Porsche design department. The 911 retained the air-cooled, rear engine layout and independent rear suspension and would not only see a continuous production run right up to the present day , but it would also become the most successful "road derived' race car in history. None of the "blue riband' motorsport events in the world from right through from Le Mans, Daytona, the Targa Florio, and International rallies to national grass-roots events were complete without a Porsche 911 in one guise or another. In World Endurance events the Porsche 911, with its production underpinnings, became a 'nemesis' even to purpose built prototypes. As a sports car it has endeared itself to the world's motoring fraternity and continues to feature as one of the top three cars of all time.

Offered here, and often regarded as the purest of all Porsche 911's, is a 1968 911L SWB. Only a few of this version were delivered to Porsche Cars Great Britain, Isleworth in 1968. The total production worldwide was less than 500 units. The 'L' temporarily replaced the 911S in the USA due to emission requirements.

Porsche 911L SWB, chassis number #11810682 is an excellent example of an early 911. It was UK delivered new and is now in beautifully restored condition. The history file contains the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and receipts for recent mechanical work that was undertaken by a Porsche Specialist, all of which goes to ensuring that it is a pleasure to drive. The recent fitment of Weber 40 IDA3C Carburettors gives this 911 the characteristic 'bark' of a well sorted 2.0 litre 6 cylinder Porsche.

Five years ago the bodywork was completely restored to a very high standard and painted Powder Blue (there is a photo record in the history file) and re-trimmed in Tan leather. The dashboard is particularly pleasing with sharp detail and the period radio completes the effect. XPX 42F has a current MoT certificate and is taxed (though exempt) until August 2013.

The new owner will find that XPX 42F is ready to enjoy all the activities that are planned for the celebratory year of this iconic design. Not surprisingly, early 911 SWB models are rising in value and this model must represent excellent value in this condition.
