At the end of the 1969 season, Eric Broadley, owner of Lola Cars realised that he was unable to sustain the economic effort needed, particularly in engine development, to build a car capable of competing with the Porsche 917 and Ferrari 512 in the World Championships for Makes. He decided to build a car to compete in the new Sports 2-Litre Championship, where the wide availability of engines would ease the economic effort and expanded the customer base.
The resulting Lola T210 was an open sports car with an aluminium monocoque, lighter and more rigid than a conventional tube frame but more difficult to build and repair. The front and rear suspensions were conventional and a tubular sub-frame was mounted at the rear to support the engine, gearbox and suspension. The 245bhp, four-cylinder, 1.8-litre Ford Cosworth FVC was the engine of choice coupled to a 5-speed Hewland gearbox and clothed in fibreglass bodywork, this pretty little racer weighed in at 550 Kg.
Jo Bonnier was Lola's works driver and he made the best use of the 210 winning the 1970 European Championships and came within one point of winning the European Championship for Makes. The following year the T210 was upgraded to the T212 and they went on to become the most successful cars in the 1971 European Championship, winning five of the nine races and rewarding Helmut Marko with the title. Lola produced 16 T210s and a further 22 T212s, making it a commercial as well as a sporting success.
Offered here is probably the best sorted and currently quickest Lola T210 available today with a complete history and an impressive list of successes, in the past and more recently. With a refreshed Richardson Ford FVC and prepared by the talented Martin Stretton,' No-fuss Russ', and their team of race engineers in Kidderminster, it's ready to go and win in the world"s most prestigious events. In 1970 the car was run by the German BG Racing Team with driver Willy Kauhsen competing in the first five races at the Nurburgring 500 kms, Anderstorp, Hockenheim and Mugello in the European 2.0-litre Championship. For the final half of the season it participated in endurance events including the Kyalami 9hrs in South Africa with New Zealanders, John McNicoll and Willie Ferguson sharing the driving, and in October 1971 Helmut Marko managed a worthy 2nd place at the Bulawayo 3hrs. After a run of very creditable results, the first win for #SL210-07 was at the hands of Gerard Larrousse in a round of the European 2.0-litre Championship at Paul Ricard on 9-4-1972.
Ownership then passed to Swiss team owner George Foitek before being purchased by Peter Bloore of the well known "Raceparts" business and the car remained in his possession for some twenty-five years. Several years ago Broadley Automotive were entrusted to do a total rebuild and they were about 90% through that when it was purchased by our vendor who handed it over to Martin Stretton to complete the build and get it race-ready. They installed a new Richardson FVC, new belts, extinguisher, fuel cells, wheels, shocks, springs, exhaust etc. and generally finished the car to their normal high standards. Consequently, our vendor has really enjoyed enjoying driving this car for the last three seasons in the Masters and CER1 with some excellent results culminating with a win at Paul Ricard last October.
Careful preparation and shared driving duties on occasions with Martin Stretton has ensured that 07 has remained the most competitive Lola T210 currently out there and is eligible for, and welcome at, all the 'Blue Ribband' sports car events in the world.
