DESCRIPTION

Lotus launched a legend in 1962, the new Lotus Elan. Following on from the Elite model the new car offered improved handling, better performance and had a less fragile feel to its overall design. Below the bonnet sat a twin-cam four cylinder engine which would become a legend in its own right, powering other classic Lotus models including of course the Cortina sports-saloons. Initially the Elan came as an open two-seater, then from 1964 a fixed head coupe was also available, both bodies being constructed from GRP and mounted on a separate chassis. In 1967 a new 2+2 joined the range which offered more comfort in a classic GT format. Both models continued to sell well throughout the late-60's with various model changes including a Sprint model and a 2+2 along with more powerful engines.

This particular car was produced in 1970 as a Series 4 SE fixed-head coupé, finished in Lotus Yellow with Black interior. It comes with a certificate of authenticity from Lotus and a number of old MoT test certificates. It has been the recipient of consistent maintenance and restorative work over the last 16 years. This has seen the gradual restoration work being completed and all this is backed up by photographic documentation.

These modifications and improvements included a full re-spray in Lotus Yellow, completely new interior, new bumpers, new Lucas Halogen headlights and a complete re-wiring of the electrical system with many upgrades from standard. Mechanically, there has been significant work carried out with a huge list of jobs completed. To name but a few, the 1600 x-flow engine was re-bored to 83.5mm with new balanced 1600 crank producing 1712cc capacity. Also new Hepolite forged pistons with balanced conrods were fitted, along with a new oil pump and oil cooler and new 40 DCOE carburettors. A Weber head with ported inlets, new fuel lines, Elan Sprint cams and big valves were fitted. Also a lightened and balanced flywheel was installed, the gearbox was rebuild with competition clutch and a new balanced propshaft and propshaft joints fitted. The suspension has also been completely rebuilt with Tony Thompson shocks and springs and all brakes replaced with larger discs and calipers.

All the details are included in the history file, along with all bills and receipts for work carried out by its current owner over the last twelve months. This included an engine out mechanical overhaul that included the removal and refitting of the cylinder head and sump, installation of new timing cover and water pump assembly, fitting new engine mounts and refit of the engine. Other items replaced include new tyres all-round, the driver's door window regulator and a replacement heater valve control cable.

This superb little car looks very bright, with good shut lines and flush fitting pop-up lights. The bonnet and doors open cleanly and close with a smart snap. The same attention to detail is carried into the cockpit, with the richly figured and glossy walnut veneer making a nice contrast to the black vinyl trim.

Turning the key brings the expected Lotus twin-cam growl with the engine firing into life immediately. The engine runs beautifully and will accelerate to 60mph in approximately 5.0 seconds and has an output of 143bhp. Like any Lotus its whole demeanour begs you to head for the lanes
