DESCRIPTION
Celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year, the Porsche 911 is probably the world's most successful sports car of all time. Uniquely, its rear engine design layout challenged the thinking of engineering experts at the time - but despite this it went on to win competitions worldwide and set the bench mark for racing and rallying throughout the '60's and '70's. The continuous development over it's 50 year lifecycle has kept it at the forefront of sportscar sales throughout the world and the 911 is now still the envy of most modern sports car manufacturers globally.
Historic rallying has taken off over the last decade and its popularity has seen specialist preparers advance the development of early 911's to challenge for outright wins both on asphalt and in the forests. By far the most successful historic Porsche rally specialists in the UK are Banbury based Tuthill Porsche, whose customers have won events in historic rallying globally, including the British Historic Rally Championship and the East African Safari rally. Father and son, Francis and Richard, have gathered an enormous amount of experience and knowledge and have built well over 100 competition cars for the some of the best drivers in the world to use - including Björn Waldegård, Jimmy McRae, Russell Brookes, Tony Pond, Walter Röhrl, Michèle Mouton and more recently Francois Deleçour.
Over the last decade they have also specialised in producing cars for the East African Safari, culminating in an outright win in 2011 with father and son team Björn and Matheus Waldegård.
This particular car was fully prepared in 2005 from a bare 1970 2.2 Porsche 911 T shell to full 'Safari Spec' and was then driven and tested by Jimmy McRae, before being used for just 2 events - the 2005 East African Safari rally, driven by John Lloyd to 4th place overall, and the 2006 Carrera Sudamericana driven by our vendor on his first major event to 10th place overall.
The specification is very comprehensive, as it was built on a "no-expense spared' basis, which included a welded cage that picks up on all suspension points, including the rear torsion tube. Full Safari suspension that includes WRC four way fully adjustable dampers, a 90 litre tank, which has been designed to accommodate twin spare wheels , a competition lightweight wiring loom and latest dashboard, centrally mounted 'Marathon' oil tank, oil coolers mounted in the 'Duck Tail' rear spoiler etc. The engine is a 3.0 litre high torque, with twin plugs giving a healthy and reliable 250 plus bhp, it is coupled to an LSD and high ratio competition gearbox with its own oil cooler.
An equivalent new-build car today, Tuthill inform us, would cost in excess of £150k and this car is still more than capable of a podium place in any major International historic rally. As such it offers outstanding value and a unique opportunity in the market place today. Please contact Nick Whale for further details or an appointment to view.
