1971 Ford Escort MK1 RS 1600

Production of the RS1600 began at Ford's Halewood assembly plant in January 1970 with the first cars going on sale in April/May of that year at a cost of £1447. Initial production cars were essentially re-engined Twin Cam's and was only available in White. Homologation of the RS1600 into Group 2 was achieved in September 1970 on the basis of one thousand vehicles having been constructed. In fact, best estimates suggest that only around 1137 RS1600's were actually produced over the vehicles entire five year production span to the end of 1974. From November 1970 production was transferred to Ford AVO's (Advanced Vehicle Operations) purpose built assembly line at Aveley, South Okendon where it was joined by a new model, the Escort Mexico. Two additional colours, Sunset Red and Maize Yellow were also made available at this time with further additions to follow at the end of 1971.

We are informed by the vendor that YKP 877J, one of the earliest known remaining examples of an original RS1600 BDA twin cam was the subject of a full bare metal restoration and complete refurbishment. A photographic documentation is included in the sale of this car and merely emphasises the attention to detail that this car received when being recommissioned. The orange paintwork is smooth and blemish free, it is reported to be as bright and detailed underneath while all shut lines are spot on and the overall stance of the car looks exactly right, even down to its original steel wheels. We are told that the car has a current mileometer reading of just under 29000 miles and it has been driven less than 100 miles in the last four years since restoration

Specific attention to every detail within the car has been made using genuine NOS (New Old Stock) parts where replacement was required. The rear chrome bumper still even has a period "Ford" sticker on it. Absolute correct unmarked interior, correct dash and instruments all merely emphasise the attention to detail that has gone into this beautiful motor car. The spotless and leak free BDA twin cam delivers the kind of sound you want from a British sports car, with no smoke or signs of overheating and is complimented by a beautifully presented engine bay.
