DESCRIPTION
In the early 1970s, Mercedes-Benz built what many people believe were the finest automobiles in the world. For the buyers who wanted wind in their hair there was no finer choice than the 3.5 litre V8 engined, 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet which was the fastest, most sumptuous and most expensive convertible that money could buy at a Mercedes-Benz dealership. This was the first Mercedes-Benz to feature a V8 engine, and it didn't disappoint! These ultra-luxurious models came equipped with air-conditioning, power steering, automatic transmission, electric windows and radios as standard fitment. It was a car that appealed then for the above reasons and now because it is the epitome of 70,s style. This model should not be confused with the other similar looking Mercedes-Benz Coupes or Cabriolets that were available in vast numbers since 1963, (220, 250, 300 or even 280SE V6), as this was Mercedes' first V8 and to accommodate this superb engine the grill had to be designed lower and wider.
Offered here is a left-hand drive example presented in dark blue with a beige leather interior and hood that originally started life as a 280SE 3.5 Coupe delivered new in Germany. Our vendor believes that it was converted in the 1980s by a company in Frankfurt, although there are no bills in the history file for such work. Documents in the file lead us to believe that the car has resided in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands during its lifetime, before being brought to the UK by our vendor most recently. Import duties have been paid, and hence a NOVA reference number granted. Please be aware that the new purchaser will have to register the car with the DVLA to obtain a UK V5c and UK registration.
In May of this year, the car was sent to Mercedes-Benz specialists, SS Motors of Weybridge, for a full vehicle inspection & report, an MoT and work which included removal of old fuel pipes and re-fitting new ones, strip down and re-assembly of the off-side front hub and front suspension lubrication along with a host of other jobs, for which there is a bill of £1,700 in the history file.
With original 280SE 3.5 Cabriolets now commanding premium prices, this example, albeit a conversion of a coupe, is a presentable car that will cause a stir when you pull up at any classic event this summer.
