1971 Mercedes-Benz 600 SWB Limousine

By the start of the 1960s, Mercedes-Benz offered drivers a range of saloon cars, sports cars and utility vehicles and in order to complete a "full house', Mercedes-Benz decided that a super prestige saloon, akin to the earlier Grosser models of the 1930s, ought to be included. In 1963, the all-new 600 model was launched at the Frankfurt International Motor Show and represented the very best of Mercedes-Benz automotive engineering and technology, featuring a 6.3 litre V8 engine, air suspension with variable ride control, all-round disc brakes, power steering and central locking. The cabin was luxuriously finished with expensive wood, leather, and carpets and rear seat passengers enjoyed privacy curtains and wind deflectors on the rear windows.

The most popular version was the 3,200mm (10' 6") wheelbase saloon that could seat up to six passengers, whilst the long-wheelbase Pullman limousine, exceeding 20' in length and beloved of Heads of State, could accommodate up to eight. Despite its, not inconsiderable, weight, the 600 was endowed with highly respectable performance, reaching 60mph in a little under 10 seconds and exceeding 125mph flat out. Only 2,677 examples were made, of which 2,190 were four-door saloons, 428 were Pullman limousines and 59 were Landaulettes.

We are pleased to offer this original UK right-hand drive 600 Short Wheel Base Limousine, first registered to Barclay Hotels Ltd. of 2 Hyde Park Place, London in April 1971. We can only assume that the hotel required a luxurious car to ferry around its important guests, and this dramatic car would certainly have fitted the bill. Finished in metallic blue with a cream leather interior, the car can be described as being in good condition with a few areas that would benefit from some attention. There are no signs of rust on the bodywork and the interior could be brought back to life with a thorough leather clean. At the time of photographing, the car was being prepared for sale and a new fuel pump fitted.

Little is known regarding the history of the car after its time in London, however, our vendor found the car in Austria last year and brought it back to the UK. The car has been NOVA'd and all taxes have been paid upon repatriation. Please note, that the buyer will need to MoT and register the car with the DVLA to obtain a UK V5c.
