DESCRIPTION
The Triumph TR6 was the best-selling Triumph in history when production ended in 1976 and was the last of the hairy chested big six cylinder engine TRs. More than 94,000 TR6s were built, ninety per cent of them to US specification. The TR6 was a refined sports car. It featured pile carpets on floors and boot (trunk), plush-looking bucket seats, a lovely wooden dashboard and a full complement of instrumentation. In the US, it featured the six-cylinder engine that was carried over from the TR250, while the UK version had a more powerful fuel-injected engine from the TR5 that included the Lucas mechanical fuel injection system. It traces its lineage back to the four-cylinder Triumphs: TR4, TR4A, TR3/TR3A and TR2. This stylish six-cylinder sports car is regarded by some as the last true Triumph.
Finished in Damson red with contrasting black interior this particular TR6 has only had one recorded owner from new and is described by the vendor as being a completely original unmolested car. It offers heaps of no nonsense British roadster fun and with 150bhp on tap it has that proper sports car 'burble'. We are informed that the mileage of 69,000 is absolutely genuine and is supported by 29 previous MoT certificates. There are early servicing records and invoices along with the original purchase order and invoice from when the car was delivered new back in 1971.
As you might expect from such a well maintained car with modest mileage, this TR6 looks highly original. That means it wears an appropriate patina rather than looking box fresh or newly restored. So, cosmetically, it isn't perfect, but its slightly worn appearance is highly appropriate and there are no faults to cause any anguish. All is sound and original inside with none of the usual worn seating issues associated with TR6s; the folding hood is in excellent order throughout with no nasty holes or tears, the wood veneer cockpit is unmarked and all gauges work correctly. Of particular interest is the fact that this TR6 also comes with the desirable factory hard top which is reported to be in excellent order.
The engine - very tidy in a clean engine bay - starts immediately and runs smoothly without any smoke or leaks. The straight six offers lots of grunt from low down and pulls well in all gears with overdrive on third and fourth that engages smoothly. If you're inclined, there's a whole world of power and handling upgrades which can make the last of the hairy chested TRs much hairier, while maintaining its practical and consistent nature. Offered with a fresh MoT, if you want to own one of the most original TR6s anywhere then this is the car for you.
