1972 Datsun 240Z

The launch of the Datsun 240Z was well timed. As the spiritual successor to the much-loved Austin Healey 3000, enthusiasts were keen on finding its natural successor. It achieved major success on track and stage, with an outright victory on the East African Safari in both '71 and '73. This translated into an instant sales success on both sides of the Atlantic. It was particularly successful in the USA, where it was very competitively priced when compared with both domestic and rival imported competition, making it the best-selling sports car in the world at that time.

The lusty 2.4 straight six overhead cam engine delivered over 150bhp and gave the car a 0-60mph time of around 8 seconds and a 125mph top speed. A five-speed manual gearbox was standard and the car featured independent suspension all round, with MacPherson struts at the front and Chapman struts at the rear. Rack and pinion power steering and front disc brakes enhanced the package still further.

This original right hand drive, bright looking UK car from 1972, was purchased by our vendor to add to his significant personal collection about three years ago. Since then he has put considerable time into detailed improvements - including a professional re-trim to the seats, carpets and door cards as well as refurbished wheels and new tyres, re-chromed bumpers, rubber bumper inserts, reconditioned fuel tank, new clutch, new scuff plates, door mirror, door locks and seals, tailgate light and badges. The standard specification has been enhanced by the fitting of a modern stereo system with I-Pod and Bluetooth facilities and electric windows.

The vendor believes the indicated 25,300 miles to be correct as the vehicle has enjoyed long periods of careful storage during its life as its rarity began to emerge. In fact, it is thought that less than 100 original UK 'Z's are currently drivable on the road today. Certainly, our close inspection on 31-1-2013 confirms these thoughts as the overall condition of the body, engine, gearbox and well-known rust areas seem to be original and unaffected by extensive mileage.
