SUMMARY
An incredibly rare LJ GTR XU-1 'homologation special' from long-term UK ownership.
DESCRIPTION
- Believed to be one of the first 200 XU-1s built in early '72 for recognition of the model for motorsport competition/ series production racing with eyes focussed on the forthcoming Bathurst 500
- Powered by a 3310cc straight-six offering 190bhp @ 5600rpm (correct 'JP' prefix engine number)
- #ALJ00456B was first registered to Grahame Ward of Pymble on 24/04/1972
- The owner/service guide shows 1 service stamp at 3,662 miles which was carried out in Australia
- Imported to the UK in 1976 at 22,640 miles. 1st MOT by Alpina at 23,653 miles. The current mileage is 50,757
- In storage and unused until purchased by our vendor in early 1979 and UK registered on 1/03/1979
- Last used on the road in December 1982 although it has received further attention since (see Condition Report)
- The car has had an asbestos survey and given the “all clear” should it be exported to Australia
- Supplied with a Copy of the original registration, original GM Warranty Certificate, Holden valuation for Customs Import, Alpina correspondence, UK Customs and Excise clearance, LJ Series Owners Manual - Owners Guide - Parts Catalogue, UK V5C, MOTs '77-'83 and the Asbestos Survey and Certificate of Conformity
- All three important identity tags are still in place
- Mainly original factory coat of 'Strike me Pink', the car is in mixed condition (see Report), however, realistically needs restoration
- As one of the 200 cars with an early 1972 compliance build date, this is a rare car, certainly the only one in the UK and possibly in Europe. With all its original paperwork, lots of history and one UK owner for 42 years this is an important part of Torana history
- NB. Following Peter Brock's remarkable win at the 1972 Hardie-Ferodo Bathurst 500 on the 1st of October, the factory produced 150 'Bathurst' commemoration XU-1 models in late 1972. Our Pink car pre-dates those.

Starting:
Running:
Remarks
RUNNING: The car is currently a non-runner due to last being started in the summer of 1985. It has just had the inlet/exhaust manifold gasket removed during the recent asbestos survey. I removed the cylinder head in May 2021 to check the condition of the bores etc. following a very strange incident where mice had stored peanuts in the exhaust manifold (as per the photos). Due to an exhaust valve being open, some nuts went into the cylinder which stopped the engine turning over by hand. Everything was removed, cleaned and checked out ok. I refitted the head but used the original gasket, knowing that the head would have to be modified to run on the higher octane unleaded fuel, as it ran on 5*leaded before.

CLUTCH: The clutch worked fine when last used.

Wheels & Tyres:
Remarks
SUSPENSION: The shock absorbers were replaced at about 40,000 miles with either spax or koni BEARINGS: All ok when driven last BRAKES: The brake pads and shoes were replaced probably during 1980, as spare ones had been sent over with the car as well as other useful spares that would not have been readily available in the UK at that time. The brakes worked fine when used last, however, due to standing for such a long period, I would suggest they are checked and serviced. WHEELS AND TYRES: Original wheels, not in great condition and unfortunately the chrome rims are missing, this was not an issue as I had intended to fit alloy wheels. The tyres were only fitted for moving and storage purposes and are in fair condition

Vehicle History
Remarks
The owner / service guide only shows 1 service stamp at 3662 miles which was carried out in Australia. The car had 22640 miles showing when it came through UK customs. The mileage was 23653 when Alpina had it 1st MOT’d. The current mileage is 50757. I am the only UK registered owner. During my ownership and being a motor mechanic, all services and any repairs required were carried out according to the service book and workshop manual, however, unfortunately I never stamped the service book as I never intended to sell the car. Records of the various works and services carried out were lost when Alpina closed due to the sad passing of Brian Muir.
