1972 Lotus Elan Sprint DHC

Lotus launched a legend in 1962, the new Lotus Elan. Following on from the Elite model the new car offered improved handling, better performance and had a less fragile feel to its overall design. Below the bonnet sat a twin-cam four cylinder engine which would become a legend in its own right, powering other classic Lotus models including of course the Cortina sports-saloons. Initially the Elan came as an open two-seater, then from 1964 a fixed head coupe was also available, both bodies being constructed from GRP and mounted on a separate chassis. In 1967 a new 2+2 joined the range which offered more comfort in a classic GT format. Both models continued to sell well throughout the late-60's with various model changes including a desirable Sprint model and a 2+2 along with more powerful engines.This particular car is completely unique to the market having had only one owner from new. Purchased new on 30th November 1972 by the current registered keeper from Roger Clarke Cars Ltd, the original bill of sale shows that he put down a mere £20 deposit and agreed to buy the car for £1,867. Judging by the significant history file, this car has been treasured by its one owner and will be sorely missed as a member of the family. In 1992 it was treated to a new chassis direct from Lotus Cars, part number LR2731, and was fitted by renowned marque specialist Paul Matty. Having covered 79,250 genuine miles from new, this example is in supremely original condition. The owner was meticulous in every little job carried out since 1972, from mechanical components all the way through to the light fixings, this car has been carefully maintained as the pride and joy of a private collector. It is very rare to find a standard Elan that has been in continuous ownership from new, however, we have never seen a more desirable Sprint model with such impeccable provenance. Finished in the most appropriate Gold Leaf colour combination made famous by the Lotus Racing cars of the era, GNR 628L will be supplied with a full years MoT and offers its next owner a mouth-watering opportunity to be only the second registered keeper of this iconic and collectable little Lotus.
