1973 Lotus Elan Sprint Drophead Coupe

Lotus launched a legend in 1962, the new Lotus Elan. Following on from the Elite model the new car offered improved handling, better performance and had a less fragile feel to its overall design. Below the bonnet sat a twin-cam four cylinder engine which would become a legend in its own right, powering other classic Lotus models including of course the Cortina sports-saloons. Initially the Elan came as an open two-seater, then from 1964 a fixed head coupe was also available, both bodies being constructed from GRP and mounted on a separate chassis. In 1967 a new 2+2 joined the range which offered more comfort in a classic GT format. Both models continued to sell well throughout the late-60's with various model changes including a desirable Sprint model and a 2+2 along with more powerful engines.This stunning Lotus Elan Sprint was first registered new on 26th March 1973 and was originally finished in Yellow with Gold Leaf and White. A very impressive history file details expenditure on this vehicle right back to 1976, when the car had covered 9,788 miles. A fastidious previous owner went through all of the paperwork and has supplied a complete breakdown on all work carried out. In 2011, GDD85L was fully stripped to the bare body shell and all necessary components removed. The body was completely removed from the chassis and the chassis shot blasted and powder coated. The car was then reassembled and painted. Both the engine, clutch and gearbox were also overhauled. All work was completed by marque experts Classic and Sports cars of Essex and there is a full breakdown of the rebuild in the history file, along with bills and receipts. Old MoT test certificates date back to the 1980s and the mileage has just surpassed 91,000 miles from new. Supplied with an original service booklet and handbook, along with a photographic record of the rebuild, this Elan Sprint would be a genuine concours contender. Equally welcome on either the track or road, this little Elan pulls extremely well and seemed very quick and responsive when photographed. A true turn-key investment.
