SUMMARY

 Attractive US-spec 2-litre Spider from long-term ownership.

DESCRIPTION

  • Series 2, 'Coda Tronca', left-hand drive 2-litre car imported from the US in 1997
  • US 2-litre cars were fitted with SPICA fuel-injection and received the Tipo 115.41 model code
  • Finished in Farina Red and and still wearing its original Campagnolo alloys but now fitted with European chrome bumpers
  • Purchased by our vendor in 1999 and maintained by BLS Autos and Alfa Workshop since then
  • Most recently serviced during November 2021 with the details in the history file
  • There is also evidence in the file of an engine rebuild in 1987 with new pistons, rings and valves
  • Recent attention includes a new roof, recovered seats, door cards and carpet set
  • The car is described by our vendor as "having very good oil pressure and still feels strong"
  • This is a good, usable example of the ever popular Spider, and further detailing would take it to the next level

Remarks

I believe, based on what i was told by the people who look after the car for me, that the car is structurally good. I waxoyled when i bought it in 1999 and it has been kept garaged and away from road salt since then. The paintwork is not perfect. It has not been resprayed during my ownership but i beleive it was previously. it has a few minor scratches and small dents. There is evidence of paint bubbling/corrosion on bottom of sill but no other sign of corrosion. Commensurate with mileage there are numerous touch ups of stone chips. The hood was replaced by Coburns (Alfa hood specialists) in 2011. The US bumpers have been replaced by 2nd hand European items. The car has the original Campagnolo alloy wheels - 4 are in good condition, one has some superficial damage to the centre.

Interior

Door-Cards:

Carpets:

Seating:

Headlining:

Dashboard:

Boot:

Remarks

The seats have been retrimmed in vinyl. The doorcards have been retrimmed in fabric. The carpet has been replaced with a foam backed material cut to fit - it is not a fitted carpet set designed for the car. The gauges and lights all work. The dashboard and centre console had dried and cracked so the centre console has been replaced - the dashboard could not be replaced and has been covered with a moulded plastic cover supplied by ClassicAlfa. The choke lever/hand throttle does not work as it not fixed in the console. It is not a problem as it not needed to start the car. The cigarette lighter is not wired in - there is a 12v socket in the glove box.

Engine

Components:

Appearance:

Remarks

The engine is original (see letter from Alfa Romeo Storico) There is a recepit from 1987 for new pistons, liners, valve guides and valve shims. I have not had any major work done on the engine. Gauge shows same oil pressure for the last 50000mls The engine is i beleive fine. It was last serviced in Nov 2021 since when its only done <1000mls. The car starts immediately from cold. Even in winter i run the engine for about 30minutes every couple of weeks to keep everything lubricated. The fan has been replaced and the radiator refurbished/recored - the car doesnt overheat. The engine originally had SPICA fuel injection - this has been replaced (prior to my ownership) by Dellorto carburetors. The starter motor has been replaced and brake servo replaced.

Transmission

Gears:

Clutch:

Drive-Shaft:

Remarks

The clutch (hydraulic) operates fine. The gearbox operates fine. The clutch was replaced approx 35000mls ago. The propshaft has been balanced and the propshaft joints replaced.

Running Gear

Chassis:

Suspension:

Bearings:

Brakes:

Wheels & Tyres:

Remarks

The car has been serviced annually since 1999 by BLS Automotive and Alfa Workshop. Over the years many bushes/joints/mounts etc have been replaced in addition to brake consumables. The car has used been used regularly and i have ensured it was maintained so that was usable and reliable.

Electrics

Minor:

Major:

Remarks

Everything electrical works. The headlamps have been replaced. The engine originally had USA emissions devices which have been removed. There are therefor numerous redundant wires in the wring loom.

Vehicle History

Remarks

The car was originally a USA model California and New Mexico. It was exported back to southern Italy in 1992. It was imported to the UK (I believe by its owner) in 1997. I bought it in 1999. It has been annually serviced . I have all reciepts for services and work done.

Restoration Notes

while i'm not aware that the car has been restored overall it has had work done in specific areas - the door cards and seats are re trimmed. The lower rear part of the front wings have been cut out and replaced . I believe the the body has been resprayed prior to my ownership (based on colour change evident in door shuts and overspray on rubber items)

Import Notes

The car was originally a USA model. It was exported back to Italy in 1992. It was imported to the UK (I believe by its owner) in 1997. It has since had a V5
