DESCRIPTION
The 308 GTB was launched at the Paris Motor show in 1975 as a direct replacement for the Dino 246. Designed by Pininfarina with sweeping curves and aggressive lines the 308 has gone on to become one of the most recognised Ferraris of all time. The targa topped 308 GTS version was introduced in 1977 and was made famous by the TV series "Magnum PI". Fitted with a 2.9 litre DOHC V8 engine breathing through four Weber 40DCNF Carburettors and producing 255bhp, the 308 went from 0 to 60mph in 6.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 159mph. In 1980 fuel injection was added to the 308 and power went down from 255bhp to 214bhp however, two years later, four valves per cylinder were added giving quattrovalvole models 240bhp. The 308 was manufactured in both GTB and GTS forms from 1977 to 1985 before being replaced by the 328.
Offered from family ownership since 2003, this right-hand drive 308 GTS was supplied new in 1978 and is a desirable carburettor example. Finished in the original Ferrari colour of Giallo Fly Yellow with complementing black leather interior, it has kerb appeal like no other.
This GTS is well equipped with the optional 16" magnesium alloy wheels, air conditioning and a deep front spoiler. The car benefited from a professional respray in 2013 and some expert finishing and, apart from one or two small stone chips incurred in the 1500 miles since, it's in excellent condition. The engine is good and solid with no unusual smoking, leaks or rattles. Likewise the gearbox appears to function well with the gears engaging cleanly with no synchromesh problems. The only blemish to note on the entire car is the wear to the drivers' seat bolster, which is not an uncommon problem given the softness of the leather and is commensurate with mileage of around 86,000.
This car has received regular maintenance from several trusted specialists, most notably Dick Lovett Ltd, Hollingsworth of Ombersley (now The Supercar Rooms), and recently from the personal workshops of its privateer owner, himself a very competent mechanic and restorer with many past projects successfully completed. In 2006 at 72,000 miles the engine was professionally rebuilt with new valve guides, bearings, shims, gaskets, cam belts and tensioners and water pump. The engine and gearbox were separated and the gear selection bush was replaced and oil leaks rectified. Prior to auction, on behalf of the new owner, the vendor will service the car, replace the timing belts and tensioners, alternator belt, change the oil and filter and present the vehicle with a fresh MOT.
The car is completely standard save for, in our opinion, the very sensible ECU electronic ignition upgrade which has been discretely mounted out of sight. The original distributor and coils are in full working order and will accompany the vehicle should the new owner prefer to reverse this change. This special Ferrari is accompanied by the original bill of sale, letter to the first owner from the supplying dealer, further correspondence and invoices dating back to the 1980's and enough MOT's to corroborate the mileage. This GTS absolutely looks the part in Giallo Fly, but don't take our word for it, come and see for yourself.
