Very desirable and sought-after early single mirror model

DESCRIPTION

Featured and reviewed in 'GT Porsche' magazine by Andrew Frankel Original and unmodified with exception of the exhaust Original service record, handbook, and 1978 Sales Brochure Good history file. Porsche Certificate of Authenticity 95,000 miles over 40 years. Original 'Telephone Dial' wheels Porsche's intended replacement for the 911 may not have achieved that particular goal, but it wasn't for a lack of performance or technological wizardry. An alloy V8 was attached to a rear-mounted gearbox, and the galvanised body had aluminium doors and bonnet, plus body-coloured plastic bumpers - pretty radical for its time. The 928 was launched to a fanfare and surprised many by being named 'European Car of the Year', an award that traditionally went to worthy, but dull, family hatchbacks. Critics immediately recognised the advances inherent in the 928 over the 911, and the car was universally praised as one of the greatest 'GT' cars of all time. It handled, it was quick, it looked fantastic and it was comfortable. With the 928, Porsche created a serious long distance grand-touring car that could also tackle twisting B-roads with ease, thanks to super-direct steering, 50/50 weight distribution and a clever Weissach rear axle that kept the car firmly planted. The 928 was produced from 1978 until 1995, and from '78 to'80 the initial displacement of the water-cooled, single overhead cam, V8 engine was 4.5 litres which produced 240bhp, resulting in a top speed of 158 mph and a 0-60 time of 6.2 seconds. The styling was the same in both 1978 and 1979, with the body lacking both front and rear spoilers. The distinctive rounded rear end without a spoiler is an unmistakable distinguishing feature of the early 928 - and is now considered the purest example of the design. This particular example is a, now rare, early single mirror variant presented in classic Guards Red with black and white Pasha upholstery. and was manufactured in August 1978 prior to being supplied to its first owner on 8th October 1978 by Porsche dealer Glenn Henderson at a list price of ú19,499. This lovely Porsche has been enjoyed by a number of owners, one of whom, Mr Saunders, purchased it in 1984 @44,000 miles. He obviously got on well with the car and kept it for 24 years until 2008 when, with the odometer reading 86,000 miles, he sadly parted with it to 928 enthusiasts, Doug Harvey Garages, where it was displayed for a number of years until 2013. It was also featured as the 'cover car' for the first issue of Ultimate Porsche and been driven and reviewed by Andrew Frankel. The car remains in its original state sporting no modifications with the exception of the exhaust silencers, with the originals now being difficult to obtain. It benefitted from a fresh coat of Guards Red approximately 10 years ago and remains in lovely condition. Our vendor has owned the car for the last 2 years and has continued the servicing and maintenance schedule using Porsche Hatfield where it also spent some time on their 'classic' stand. Unusually, for a 95,000-mile 40-year old car, it's still enjoying the company of its original manuals and service book and there is even a 1978 Sales Brochure published by Porsche GB. The history file offers further insights into the car's interesting life story and is home to the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity. This venerable old Porsche is now looking for a new home and we feel that it's highly unlikely that you will find another original 928 with such provenance and in such lovely original condition.
