DESCRIPTION
The Volkswagen Beetle was produced from 1938 until 2003 with over 21 million manufactured in an air-cooled, rear-engined, rear-wheel drive configuration. The Beetle is the longest-running and most-manufactured car of a single design platform anywhere in the world. During the 1950's, the car was modified progressively; the obvious visual changes mostly concerned the rear windows. In March 1953, the small oval two-piece rear window was replaced by a slightly larger single-piece window. More dramatically, in August 1957, a much larger full width rear window replaced the oval one. Part of the cult status is attributed to it being one of a few cars with an air-cooled, horizontally opposed engine design and the consequent ease of repair and modification, instead of the more conventional and technically complex water-cooled engine design.
Supplied new on the 22nd August 1978 this superb looking Beetle is actually badged as an LE (standing for Limited Edition) as it was one of the last of 300 cars to be built on the original Beetle production line in Germany and, as such, the vendor informs us of paperwork showing this car to be on a VW Beetle Last Edition Register. The original VW service book shows the car was supplied new by Fenns of Burton on Trent and was delivered new to a Mr Latkin with the car having a recorded mileage of 168 miles.
We are informed by the vendor that the 1200cc engine fires readily and settles to a hearty air cooled thrum. The four speed manual gearbox feels good compared to most of this type. The car uses its available power effectively thanks to the well-spaced gearing. We are told the brakes are progressive, while steering is both light and easy to operate, the offset pedals activate a sharp clutch and on the road its willingness to pull suggests a healthy engine.
We are told the Metallic Silver bodywork is in great condition throughout and the chromed bumpers compliment this car superbly, as do the limited edition steel wheels. This car's rear engine cover lifts to show an honest looking engine. We are told there are no visible leaks and equally the engine enclosing panels, complete with aged paint on them, create a look you can be very comfortable with.
With only four owners from new, this Beetle looks great, it's both usable and original at the same time. Later Beetles such as this are very capable of handling modern roads better than their older brethren, meaning this car would be a decent candidate for daily duties. Such good body condition, excellent mechanics and a fresh MoT make this a must see if you're in the market for the 'bestselling car in the world'.
