1980 Alfasud Ti ex-Jon Dooley

Nowadays any Alfasud that comes up for auction is a rarity. Silverstone Auctions have definitely struck gold with the ex Jon Dooley Alfasud Ti. This is definitely best described as a "Barn Find'. It is the same car that he raced so successfully in during the early 1980s. After a big accident in the old car at Oulton Park, a new shell was needed so he took his every day transport "Sud' ,that had clocked up an impressive 90,000 trouble free miles, and moved all the running from the wrecked car over to it and this became the basis of the new race car which is the one we have here for sale. The high spot for Dooley and this car was coming 3rd overall in the 1981 British Saloon Car Championship and also Class Champions. This car was the only one to finish in the points at every round in the 1981 Championship, scoring multiple class wins. It is still in the distinctive "Napolina' sponsorship livery. Dooley eventually retired the "Sud' in 1982 when he moved on to a GTV6. After a few years rest, a Group A 1500 engine was fitted and Nick Sismey and Lahoma Engineers entered the car in the 1986 BTCC round at the Grand Prix meeting at Brands Hatch. Despite the car's age, Nick ran well and he brought it home a very creditable 4th in class. Then it was finally retired and has been "resting' in Dooley's barn ever sinceIt is fitted with a 1500cc engine but the original 1300cc Group 1-1/2 race engine and some of the "1,300 cc' bodywork panels are included with the car. It has a close ratio gear box and Jack Knight Pawl limited slip diff. It also retains the original wheels. It will however require complete recommissioning. Bob Dove was Dooley's race mechanic and he was also responsible for much of the development work on the car and he would be happy to work with the new owners to get the car back into racing trim.. Depending on what that eventual rebuilt specification turns out to be the car should be eligible to race in a variety of different UK Championships. This is a very rare chance to acquire an Alfasud Ti of any sort and an even rarer opportunity to find a car with this kind of well proven and very successful race history.
