DESCRIPTION
Recently restored RS1600i with the emphasis on originality.
The Ford Escort RS1600i was built purely to meet 'Group A' homologation regulations, and was the first genuine challenger to the Golf GTI, offering more power and significantly more developed suspension, marginally out-handling the Wolfsburg icon. With limited production numbers and a high price - as well as being sold through Rallye-Sport dealers only - they were harder to come by and were sold quickly. When the car received fuel injection - and a power hike, the following year, the gap was closed ever further. Surprisingly effective in Touring Cars back then, and now extremely rare and highly sought after.
Purchased by our vendor in 2008 in need of some TLC, this excellent RS has benefitted from a rolling restoration with particular regard to the use of RS1600i parts as opposed to the easier to source items from the XR3 or RS Turbo. The vendor was very keen that the car presented as it would have done in 1983 retaining the 'twin-coil' ignition system and diligently selecting the correct fabric for the interior.
There is a history file with paperwork going back to 1992 and the car has an MoT until April 2017.
A good example of a desirable early eighties 'Fast Ford' that looks 'period-correct' and with a little detailing could be rather special.
