Motorsport played a huge part in Ford's marketing strategy and Touring Car successes on the track were frequently converted to showroom sales, the 'Sporting Ford' market having become well established by the early 1980s. The 1982 launch of the Sierra with its rear-wheel drive and good aerodynamics aligned perfectly with Ford's Touring Car aspirations and in conjunction with Cosworth it went on to dominate podiums and suburban driveways alike. Of all the Sierra Cosworth models offered during the 1980s, the RS500 and RS Cosworth are the most coveted by today's collectors and enthusiasts and, whilst the limited production RS500 may be the halo car for many, it's the, cosmetically similar, RS Cosworth that remains within reach of the enthusiast.
This car was initially registered to the first of four former keepers on the 30th May 1987 and, on the 21st June 1991, it was purchased by the current registered keeper. According to the accompanying MOT Certificates, the car had covered some 16,000 miles before it was parked up at some point in late 1998 as the tax disc in the windscreen displays. Emerging into the daylight for the first time in some twenty-two years, still covered in dust, it was sent to the workshop of Performance Paddock in Kent who were instructed to get the car running but to leave its external condition as it left the garage including any bodywork and loose trim. The accompanying invoice for ú1,320 lists a major service using Mobil 1 Oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, cambelt kit, water pump, new fuel tank and pump, crankshaft sensor and freeing off the seized brake calipers allowing the car to roll freely.
It will be presented to auction 'as is', cosmetically dirty with any loose trim untouched to preserve its appearance after its 22-year slumber. The history file includes the previously mentioned MOT Certificates, the owner's manual, radio handbook and UK V5c showing four former keepers and in the name of the current registered keeper since 1991.
