DESCRIPTION
- Bought by the Only Fools and Horses star for his long-term partner, Myfanwy Talog
- One of just 138 examples of the limited edition 'All White' Series
- The car scored a maximum 140/140 at a VW Golf GTI Concours Event some years ago
- At the time of consignment, the odometer reading was a shade over 22,000 miles
- In sparkling condition, patently cherished and almost certainly a best of breed
The VW Golf is surely one of the most iconic 'hot-hatches' ever conceived. Its popularity has never diminished and a plethora of variants and styles have always been hungrily anticipated and universally enjoyed by the car's cult following all of whom treasure the next instalment from Volkswagen. Whilst many motorists today appreciate the exhilaration of roof-down 'wind-in-your-hair' motoring, few are willing to forego saloon-car comfort in order to enjoy it, however, the Golf GTI cabriolet makes any such sacrifice unnecessary having been designed and built by one of the world's most experienced builders of open-touring cars - Karmann of Osnabruck. Lower the hood - a simple matter of releasing two clasps - and you're ready to take advantage of every moment of sunshine which a British Summer can muster.
The limited-edition 'All-White' convertible GTI offered here today is very special indeed. With an indicated mileage of just 22,171, at the time of consignment, supported by older MOTs and invoices, this car has been the property of only a handful of owners, most of whom had a connection to Sir David Jason of 'Only Fools & Horses' fame. David bought the car in May 1988 when it was one year old and registered it to Myfanwy Talog, his long-standing partner before it was transferred to Sidney Law a few months later. Sidney was David's manager at the time. Some nine years later the Golf, still showing only nominal mileage, was passed on to John Williams who was the Godfather of David's children before it was subsequently acquired by our vendor through our sister company, CCA, a few years ago.
John had purchased the car based on its remarkable condition and low mileage and spent a little time on final detailing prior to entering it into a VW GTi Owners Club Concours event. His efforts were rewarded with a win scoring an almost unheard of 140/140, a testament to the resounding quality of this car and the care with which it had been treated. The presentation of the car today is no different. The Alpine White coachwork remains fresh and the white hood, matching bumpers, door mirrors, front spoiler and diamond-cut white-painted alloys give this limited edition car real presence. We understand that the 1780cc transverse, four-cylinder, in-line engine with fuel injection performs faultlessly, and the driving experience is, as you might expect from a low-mileage GTI, really rewarding.
The car is accompanied by a good history file with old MOTs, invoices, original factory literature and details of ownership. As one of only 138 built, and in show condition with a nominal mileage, this 'All White' is undoubtedly one of the best in the world. When you add to that the connection with one of the UK's most loved actors, it's reasonable to expect that this sparkling little Karmann Cabriolet will continue to offer future value growth.
This is a fun modern classic with an interesting history and celebrity provenance and we welcome any inspection.
