DESCRIPTION
Why didn't Jaguar do it themselves everyone wondered? A more practical, proper four-seater shooting-brake version of the XJS seemed an obvious development. But it was left to Lynx, the UK-based engineering and design company, to create the Lynx Eventer - an estate car version of the XJS 5.3 V12.
Each car was built strictly to order on a custom-made jig taking 14 weeks from order to delivery. Gone were the XJS coupé's buttresses replaced by an extended roof with rear and side windows offering a vast expanse of glass. So here was a hand-built estate which addressed not only the XJS's inadequate rear seating but also the coupé's poor rear visibility. The generous rear hatch allowed easy access to the bootspace and offered a stylish practical alternative to either the severely limited standard XJS, or the more featureless volume production estates on the market.
What was amazing at the time was how competent the Eventer was to drive. The rearward shift in weight distribution required stiffer rear suspension but the XJS accepted this modification gracefully. The Eventer actually weighed less than the standard XJS - so acceleration was sharper. Here was a small home-grown engineering company with the vision and the skills to create a car that drove like the product of a multi-million pound R&D programme, matched by a level of finish and detail to rival the best.
Lynx converted this UK market right hand drive XJS V12 HE Automatic from new in 1988. Only 67 Lynx Eventers were produced and offered here is build number 40. This particular car was factory fitted with ABS, heated front seats including electrical lumbar adjustment, cruise control, air-conditioning and central locking.
Showing 78,000 miles this particular car has never been restored but has been maintained regardless of cost and as such is in excellent and importantly original condition.
Recently the car has undergone extensive work to insure that it both drives and presents in superb condition. The overhaul included attention to the steering suspension and brakes, renewed air-conditioning, new tyres fitted on to refurbished rims along with a thorough engine service and tune-up.
Offered with a superb history file which includes the complete build log held by Lynx, past MoT's and a copy of 'Classics Monthly' in which the car enjoyed a 5-page feature in May 2009.
With just 67 Lynx Eventers built this car is not only an extremely rare but also an eminently useable and practical classic car that is sure to provide enjoyment and potential investment for the successful bidder.
