DESCRIPTION
A fabulous BMW Z1. This highly original car, chassis number 'AL00438' is one of the earliest examples of this timeless classic.
First registered in the UK in 1989, this car is showing 55,000 miles and has been owned by the current vendor who is a Design Engineer for Mercedes AMG Formula 1 team for some 11 years.
Maintained to the highest standard during his ownership, the vendor informs us one of the reasons he was originally attracted to the Z1 is because he is a specialist in composite materials and the bodywork of the BMW Z1 is one of the earliest examples of advanced fibre reinforced composites being applied to road cars.
First presented at the 1987 Frankfurt motorshow, the BMW Z1 was the first product of BMW Technik GmbH and is notable for many pioneering design features including a unique sliding door concept and a galvanized sheet metal structure with plastic body panels. A total of 8,012 cars were hand built between March 1989 and June 1991 with "Top Rot' (Top Red) being the most popular colour.
Chassis AL00438, was originally registered during May 1989 in Germany but soon after was imported to the UK by Mr H Mitchell of South Glamorgan. The car we are told was taken to BMW North Oxford where it was converted to a full UK specification, including a speedometer in miles per hour. The current vendor purchased the vehicle in September 2004 from Tom Hartley Cars in Derbyshire with 33,984 miles on odometer and has averaged 2,000 miles of driving each year. We are informed various specialists with expert knowledge of the Z1 have maintained the car to the highest standards during this time. The car has been involved in many high profile events including the 25th anniversary BMW Z festival at the Silverstone Classic in 2013 and the annual BMW gathering at Gaydon. AL00438 is presented in completely original condition with the exception of the radio head unit (original BMW head unit is included in the sale with various other spares). The current owner has kept the car garaged and covered when not in use.
Last service carried out in August 2014 by DMWorx of Stoke Mandeville (54,448 miles), issued with a fresh MoT certificate, with no advisories valid till 30th of August 2016, this car is supplied with 2 original sets of keys, space saver spare tyre, original tool kit & warning triangle.
Extras included in the sale are:
Classic Additions Wind Deflector, Covercraft Fitted Car Cover. Various spares including heat shields, door belts, door brushes etc. Original radio head unit and speakers.
