When the 964 was first brought to market, Porsche was keen to emphasise that, although it was patently still a 911, it was in fact 85% different from the outgoing model. The design featured more integrated bumpers and a host of mechanical changes, most significant of which was the availability of four-wheel drive. The displacement was now up to 3600cc, producing 250bhp, power steering and ABS brakes were now fitted as standard, and the torsion bar rear suspension was replaced with coil springs and shock absorbers. Careful attention to the aerodynamics reduced the drag coefficient down to 0.32, and with virtually zero lift, stability and road holding at high speed were greatly improved. A new feature was the retractable spoiler which automatically extended at 50 mph and in addition to seriously increasing downforce, also doubled the volume of cooling air fed into the engine compartment. Fitted with a five-speed manual gearbox as standard, most variants were reputed to be capable of 0-60mph in 5.3 seconds with a top speed of over 160mph.

This four-wheel-drive example is believed to be the only right-hand drive Porsche 964 to leave the factory finished in the delicate hue of Apricot Beige and, we understand, that it was offered straight away as an Official Porsche Competition Prize for a hole-in-one at a golfing tournament. From then until now it has the most complete service history covering its 86,774 miles with twenty-five services from OPC centres and specialists and in November 2008, at 78,500 miles, it had a full engine rebuild by Specialist Cars of Malton. The original Mahogany interior has been replaced in black. The factory specification includes air conditioning, electric sunroof, electric sports seats and Blaupunkt Toronto radio. All books are present with the fully stamped service book, original Porsche keys with immobiliser fobs, Porsche tool kit, and Porsche tyre compressor. It has set of H&R slightly lowered springs fitted to complete otherwise a very original look and has obviously been exceptionally well cherished by its former owners. New Bridgestone tyres have just been fitted and the MOT is valid until September 2021.

The Porsche 964 has now matured into a very desirable model and this striking Carrera 4 in a rare period colour offers surefooted performance at a guide that cannot be overlooked.
