SUMMARY

A very smart manual example of the E34 M5, UK-supplied, rarely seen in this condition and showing an odometer reading of 45,587 miles.

DESCRIPTION

  • Supplied by the Blue Bell Garage, Wilmslow Ltd. on the 1st May 1990 in Brilliant Red with a Champagne leather interior
  • The car was specified with optional electric roof, "de-chrome" option and AC Schnitzer alloy wheels
  • Produced from 1988, the E34 first generation of the M5 was powered by the 3.6-litre straight-six engine mated to a 5-speed Getrag manual box
  • The history file includes every previously issued MOT Certificate warranting the mileage of 45,587 (atoc)
  • Present also is the original service book, reams of historic invoices and the tool kit
  • The market for the E34 M5 has matured with UK-supplied examples in this condition and mileage in high demand.

Whilst the 1980s saw an abundance of smaller two-door sports saloon produced for touring car homologation it was the BMW M5 that invented the notion of a full sized luxury saloon capable of incredible speeds. E34 generation of the M5 was produced from September 1988 to 1995. It was hand-built at BMW M GmbH in Garching, Germany. Assembly was done either by a single M employee or a team of M employees and generally took about two weeks. In the second half of 1991, engine displacement was increased to 3.8 litres with the S38B38. Power was now increased to 335bhp and the E34 M5 was the last M5 to feature an engine with a historical link to a BMW Motorsport racing engine. An E34 M5 was raced in the Australian 1992 Bathurst 12-Hour Production Car endurance race, placing 2nd overall and 1st in class. It was driven by former F1 champion Alan Jones, Neville Crichton and BMW Touring car driver, Tony Longhurst.

Supplied by the Blue Bell Garage Wilmslow Ltd., Cheshire on the 1st May 1990 in Brilliant Red with Champagne leather interior, and like all M5s of the period, a six-speed manual gearbox. The car was specified with optional electric sunroof and unusually, although unused, a detachable hidden towbar, “chrome delete” option and AC Schnitzer alloy wheels. An invoice on file relates to the purchase and fitting of a new set of AC Schnitzer alloy wheels for £5,210, which remain on the car today. Kept by the first owner for some ten years it is said that he took the car to Germany and had the limiter removed at a cost of 2500DM, achieving just over 180mph on the autobahn before backing off.

The history file includes every previously issued MOT certificate, warranting the mileage of 45,587 miles, at the time of cataloguing. Present also is the original service book, reams of historic invoices and tool kit. Very few examples of the E34 M5 are available in the global market in this condition and mileage, and fewer still have the distinction of being UK-supplied. Presented in classic period colours for serious consideration by enthusiast and connoisseur alike.
