DESCRIPTION
Designed and executed with gruelling road-rallies in mind, this more than capable 911 features many home-comforts, meaning both Mr and Mrs Rally Entrant may enjoy touring the European routes with ease or testing the boundaries of the car on a track day. These comforts include Porsche 911 RSR power steering, ABS, four-wheel drive, air conditioning discreet glovebox-positioned controls, Rennsport support seats and all in a light, fast and capable 911 package. The donor car for this backdate recreation was a full service historied 964 C4 from 1990. An original non-sunroof coupe, it was specifically chosen as 1990 and is before the eligibility cut-off for the Targa Tasmania and Carrera Panamericana. After much deliberation, it was decided that Pro-9 Porsche of Redditch would undertake the work to produce the best road-rallying RS that could be achieved. Their previous work and projects that featured in 911 and Porsche World were credentials enough.Through 2012 and 2013, the body was stripped and rebuilt with full photographic records to IROC RSR specification with steel RSR arches. The removal of sound deadening and thick glue alone took two weeks. The car was married with a lightweight bonnet, ducktail, front and rear bumpers and bespoke design Custom Cages full welded-in roll cage for safety. The aforementioned air conditioning and front oil coolers remain in original position leaving possibility for a large oil cooler in the front opening. Light Perlon carpet set, lightweight dashboard (with important attention to detail such as no dash vents), Alcantara door tops and dashtop, relocated air vents to footwells and HVAC unit moved inside the glovebox (at a cost of more than £1500!), show that no corners were cut in the cabin either. Central locking was added for convenience, whilst computer reset buttons were moved to the period correct carbon-weave dashboard with period toggle switches, race cut-off, push-button start and all 1970's switchgear. A Sparco black suede race steering wheel of the 1970's style plus date-correct Rennsport bucket seats (XXL DEKA approved with strong frames) on sliding 964 runners make a previously terrible driving position perfectly comfortable, even if you're 6'5".Sparco harnesses, RS style door cards, black and spare chrome headlamp surrounds, black windscreen washers, period stick on front number plate, rear number plate with correct 1970's dealer details and phone number, lightweight number plate lights, HID headlight system, remote Thatcham 1 alarm, front tow strap and even 1976 period windscreen tax disc show that no detail has been overlooked.
Mechanically, the 3.6 litre engine was rebuilt in November 2014 with engine bay repainted to Gulf Blue. HR springs and Bilstein coil over shocks which lower by 30mm, plus K&N cone induction, 9F engine chip and Fabspeed twin-exit custom exhaust in stainless steel enables the heater and cats to remain functioning correctly. Finally, correct style 16" original Fuchs wheels - front and rear - with correct spacers, blacked-out oil, period rear light units, 3.6 engine bay badging, plus rear Gulf Racing grill-badge complete the package. Previous service history in the original service book shows 12 services, all at official Porsche centres until 2000 and 11 services until 2013, mainly with Chelsea Carrera and Pro9 Porsche. Serviced at AFN in January 2015, it has a very thick file of original and sundry invoices too. The tracker is paid until 2019 and will transfer to new owner, as can the contact details of several journalists who have approached the owner with a view to featuring the car in several related magazines.Very few Backdate 911s have the true period accuracy that this one has. Fewer still have had such sums of money lavished on them as have been ploughed into this car - more than £50,000! It has been an obsessive mission by our vendor to ensure that it doesn't look like a mix and match pastiche with the wrong vents or modern buttons. The result is a 911 that looks right, sounds right and goes exceptionally well, given that several hundred kilos have been shed!
