The BMW M3 was a revolution for the manufacturer when launched in 1986 as it was the first saloon car to be totally designed around winning in European and global Touring Car Racing.

From the 50/50 weight distribution, the wider wheels arches through to the close-ratio gearbox and limited-slip differential - not to mention the now-famous, 4- cylinder 16valve high-revving double overhead camshaft power unit - everything was optimised for performance.

It was a true 'homologation special' in every sense of the words and allowed BMW to be competitive from day 1 in all domestic Touring Car series throughout the world. It was a global winning formula on road and track.

Here in the UK, the M3 was also successful on the track, but more limited in the showroom, as all cars were left-hand drive and at ú26,000 ~ not a cheap shout. A Ferrari 328 was not much more expensive at the time so it took a salesman of exceptional ability (ahem!) to sell the cars in the UK.
