Mercedes-Benz, with their engineering department busy with the new S-Class, commissioned Porsche in 1989 to redesign the W124 chassis to enable the 5.0-litre V8 from the S-Class to be shoehorned in, along with the necessary changes to the suspension system and drivetrain. The ultimate 'wolf in sheep's clothing' of the 1990s, the 500E saloon was built to rival the BMW M5 and was created in close cooperation with Porsche. The new stealth saloon offered no visible clues on the outside except for very slightly flared wheel arches, wider tyres, and discreet side skirts. 60mph arrived in just five seconds and 100mph in just over 14 seconds, remarkable for a car with such stately presence. It was only available as a hand-built, four-door saloon in left-hand drive and the low production numbers rendered it an instant classic.
With virtually every option box ticked, including the very rare 'badge delete', the car was supplied by Mercedes-Benz Autohaus Oberhausen Mercedes-Benz of Essen, Germany on the 9th June 1992 and serviced by them four times up to 20,212km. It was subsequently purchased by Senor Mesegur of Barcelona in 1996 and the service book and invoices show the mileage increased to 115,443km under his ownership. Maintained by Mercedes-Benz of Barcelona under Senor Mesegur's sole ownership and serviced seven times until the car was imported into the UK and registered on the 1st April 2016, annually MOT'd and last serviced on the 25th April 2019 at 120,004km. Apart from routine servicing, the car has also benefited from a replacement wiring loom in the engine bay, carried out by Mercedes-Benz Barcelona in 2015 along with additional works.
With an odometer reading, at the time of cataloguing, of 120,653km or some 75,000 miles, the Mercedes present beautifully and is offered to auction freshly MOT'd. The history file is bursting with main dealer and specialist invoices and contains the complete original handbook pack and spare key. Very few cars today offer the same understated looks and blistering performance combined with inter-marque engineering and Mercedes-Benz build quality.
