DESCRIPTION
The London Taxi- or Black Cab, must truly be one of the world's most recognisable and iconic vehicles. Originating in London as 'Hackney Coaches' (latterly Hackney Carriages) the name is taken either from a part of London famed for horses and coaching or from the French word 'haquenee' - an ambling horse. Depending on which version you believe, the history of the carriage can be traced to their origins as early as 1621.
Taxis are so-named after 'Taximeters' the device to measure time and distance, thereby calculating an accurate fair. The word 'cab' after 'cabriolet'- a one horse, two-wheeled carriage let out for hire.
Manufacturers such as Beardmore and Austin became synonymous for producing taxis. The Austin FX3 was a taxicab designed to comply with the Metropolitan Police Conditions of Fitness for London taxicabs. It was commissioned from Austin by taxi dealers Mann and Overton and built by Carbodies of Coventry on a chassis supplied by Austin, as is this vehicle.
This 1995 'Fairway' taxi is offered for sale having completed its fifteen year career in London. Maintained to the highest possible standards during her working life and originally purchased new by her owner/driver serving London daily from his home in Kent.
This faithful City servant has begun to show the wear of London driving and has journeyed over 300,000 miles, however, the bullet-proof Nissan 2.7 diesel engine still performs and this cab is a delight to drive. The smooth automatic gearbox with overdrive engages and delivers as you would expect. These vehicles boast the tightest of turning circles at only 25ft. One reason for this is the configuration of the famed Savoy Hotel. The hotel entrance is a small roundabout meaning that vehicles needed the tight turning circle in order to navigate it. That requirement became the legally required turning circle for all London Cabs. Contrary to popular belief, this steering ability ensures that this cab CAN go south of the river!
Unusually, this cab comes complete with its original taximeter and the exterior 'For Hire' lights, all in full working order. MoT'd to July 2013 and currently taxed this unusual offering from Silverstone Auctions is available today Without Reserve.
This really is the vehicle for the car enthusiast who has everything. With limited numbers of such cabs available and many years of enjoyment ahead, this is a golden opportunity to sit in your own authentic London Taxi, tip your cap and imagine saying, "where to guv'nor..?!"
* Please note: This vehicle is taxed as PLG and is a private motor car only. It is illegal to drive on a public highway with the orange 'For Hire' light on and vehicle can not carry fare paying passengers.
